The red currant (Ribes rubrum) is a berry native to western Europe: Belgium, Germany, France, the Netherlands, northern Italy, and northern Spain. It is a deciduous shrub, normally 1 to 1.5 meters tall, sometimes 2 m, with a palmately lobed leaf of five lobes. The flowers are inconspicuous yellow-green and the edible berries are bright red.
